SWG Project Management Unit/ Secretariat for the cross-border region of “Drina-Tara” opened in Visegrad, 23 December 2013

“The borders between the rural areas of the neighbouring countries are becoming bridges for promoting understanding and joint actions towards better life!”

As a result of successfully completed second phase of the activities related to preparations for implementation of the Area Based Development Approach (ABDA) in the Western Balkan countries, the program implementer – the Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group (SWG) in South-Eastern Europe recently started with establishing and opening of SWG Project Management Units/Secretariats in the four involved cross-border regions.

Together with “Drina-Sava”, “Prespa” and “Sharra”, “Drina-Tara” Region was one of the four (4) cross-border areas of the Western Balkans selected by the SWG Assembly in December 2011.

After this, baseline study and strategic framework for each of the selected regions were prepared. At the same time, structures for local participation in the ABDA process, through the Stakeholder Group representing local authorities, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and business sector have been created.

In March 2013, Mayors from 14 municipalities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and belonging to “Drina-Tara” cross-border region signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as an official prove for the willingness and readiness for participation in the process of mutual cooperation and joint actions for socio-economic development of this cross-border region.

Up till now, more than 100 representatives from 50 Stakeholders’ organizations took part in various planning meetings, trainings, workshops and field trips intended to help develop participatory approach as well as facilitation, animation and consolidation of the stakeholder structures for further implementation of the economic development programmes within the ABDA.

As a result of joint vision and participatory planning process of the stakeholders, in close cooperation with local, regional and EU experts, a Programming Document for economic development of the cross-border region of “Drina-Tara” is drafted and the following measures for its future implementation are defined:

  • Support to sustainable rural economic development;
  • Support to sustainable management of environment and natural resources, and
  • Support to improvement of the infrastructure and energy potentials in the region please insert the measures defined in the programming document for Drina-Tara CBR (if you think it is too much, the above paragraph can end without listing of the measures!!!

At the same time, the stakeholders from “Drina-Tara” succeed to develop various project ideas and agreed on several priority project proposals.

The SWG Project Management Unit as a Secretariat of the cross-border region of “Drina-Tara” based in Visegrad, should improve the communication between the stakeholders and facilitate the implementation of the above mentioned upcoming activities oriented towards integrated economic development.
